Guy Sajer's account of his harrowing experience on the Eastern Front is made all the more desperate knowing the full outcome of the events. The last chapter is particularly heartbreaking, given the nature of his demobilisation and being forced to leave his beloved friends behind. It's a humanising look at the dehumanising effects of total warfare. "Remember us. For we too have lived, loved, and laughed."

    I have read this book 3 times now and it ceases to amaze me how vivid and compelling the reading is. The sheer way he writes about his experiences on the front and back home are truly amazing! Fantastic book and would highly recommend.

    Guy Sajer's book made all of the boys stories, gung ho novels and 'I was there' accounts I had ever read before seem insignificant. This book is harrowing, a crying out against the horror of war and yet, at the same time, a testament to the fighting spirit of youth. If you are interested in history, then this book brings it to life, brutally. If you are interested in the human spirit then it shines. And if you feel any emotion when you see irony, sarcasm and coarse humor in the circumstances this man found himself in then you are going to find this book incredible. I did.
